The service book

The intervals.

The G-Series doesn't forgive procrastination: the air-cooled flat-six lives on clean oil, correctly adjusted valves and an intact V-belt — it drives the cooling fan and is therefore directly responsible for engine cooling.

The reference values shown here come from the Porsche maintenance schedule and workshop practice. Your service book and the condition of your car are what counts — when in doubt: check earlier.

Every item links directly to the matching part groups further down this page.

Service schedule · 911 G-SeriesReference values
  • 10,000 km / 1 year

    Engine oil & oil filter

Dry-sump lubrication — check the oil level only with the engine at operating temperature, car stationary. Replace the oil filter with every change.

  • 20,000 km

    Adjust valve clearance

Mandatory on the air-cooled engine — including new valve cover gaskets.

  • 20,000–30,000 km

    Spark plugs & ignition system

Replace the plugs; check ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor arm at the same time.

  • Every service

    Check the V-belt

Drives the cooling fan and alternator — check tension and condition, replace when in doubt.

  • Every service

    Air & fuel filter

Replace the air filter element according to condition. Fuel filter with the major service — especially relevant with K-Jetronic.

  • Every 2 years

    Brake fluid

Check pads, discs and brake hoses for wear and ageing at every service.

  • As needed

    Timing chain & chain tensioner

Visual and noise check. Hydraulic Carrera chain tensioners are the proven upgrade for early engines.

  • Ongoing

    Oil circuit leak check

Check oil lines, oil tank and seals for seepage — fix small leaks early.

Frequently Asked Questions

G-Series maintenance in detail.

Which service kit fits my G-Series?

Carrera 3.0 (1976–1977): large service kit. 911 SC 180 hp (1978–1980) and 911 SC 204 hp (1981–1983): small service kit, each with the matching fuel filter. Carrera 3.2 (1984–1989, 915 and G50 gearbox): small service kit. For the 930 Turbo 3.0 we assemble the kit on request. Every item is listed with its Porsche part number in the kit's scope of delivery, delivery time 3–5 working days.

What is the difference between the small and large service kits?

Small covers the minor service: oil, fuel and air filter, spark plugs and sealing rings. Large additionally contains the valve cover gaskets with nuts and washers, which are renewed anyway when the valve clearance is adjusted. Engine oil and brake fluid are not included in any kit; you'll find matching oils in the shop.

How often does a Porsche G-Series need an oil change?

Every 10,000 km or once a year is typical — whichever comes first. The oil filter is replaced with every oil change. On the air-cooled flat-six with dry-sump lubrication, the oil level is checked only with the engine at operating temperature, car stationary.

Which maintenance jobs matter most?

Besides oil changes and brakes, above all the valve clearance (typically every 20,000 km), the ignition system with plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm, and the V-belt — on the air-cooled engine it drives the cooling fan and is therefore directly responsible for engine cooling.

What's the story with the chain tensioners?

The chain tensioners of early G-Series engines are considered wear-prone. The proven upgrade is the hydraulic, oil-fed chain tensioners of the Carrera 3.2 — including the associated oil lines and chain housing parts. You'll find the matching components in the Belts & timing drive group.

Do the parts fit my model year?

The G-Series was built from 1974 to 1989 — with many technical changes between 2.7, SC and Carrera 3.2. If the assignment is unclear, we check model year and part number before you order.

Do you ship to Switzerland?

Yes, we regularly ship to Switzerland and prepare the export documents. Swiss import duties are collected separately on delivery.

What quality are the service parts?

Our program is curated: parts in OEM / original equipment quality from established manufacturers. If an item is a genuine Porsche part, this is explicitly stated in the product description.
