The service book
The G-Series doesn't forgive procrastination: the air-cooled flat-six lives on clean oil, correctly adjusted valves and an intact V-belt — it drives the cooling fan and is therefore directly responsible for engine cooling.
The reference values shown here come from the Porsche maintenance schedule and workshop practice. Your service book and the condition of your car are what counts — when in doubt: check earlier.

Dry-sump lubrication — check the oil level only with the engine at operating temperature, car stationary. Replace the oil filter with every change.
Mandatory on the air-cooled engine — including new valve cover gaskets.
Replace the plugs; check ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor arm at the same time.
Drives the cooling fan and alternator — check tension and condition, replace when in doubt.
Replace the air filter element according to condition. Fuel filter with the major service — especially relevant with K-Jetronic.
Check pads, discs and brake hoses for wear and ageing at every service.
Visual and noise check. Hydraulic Carrera chain tensioners are the proven upgrade for early engines.
Check oil lines, oil tank and seals for seepage — fix small leaks early.

For the Carrera 3.2 the service kit comes ready packed: filters, spark plugs, sealing rings and the engine oil in the viscosity of your choice in one delivery. For 2.7, SC and Turbo we put the items together from the maintenance groups, just send us the model year and chassis number.

The oil change volume with filter is around ten litres and exactly that amount is included. You pick the viscosity when ordering. Valve cover gaskets and nuts are not part of the kit.

Carrera 3.2 (1984–1989): rund 10 Liter beim Wechsel mit Filter, das sind 5 Dosen à 2 Liter. 911 SC (1981–1983) ebenfalls rund 10 Liter. Beim Trockensumpfsystem läuft beim Wechsel nicht die ganze Menge ab, die Gesamtfüllmenge liegt darüber: für den 911 SC nennen die Werksunterlagen rund 13 Liter, für den Carrera 3.2 ist sie nicht werksseitig belegt.
Werksangaben je Baureihe. Für 2.7 und die frühen SC nennen die Werksunterlagen nur die Erstbefüllung von rund 13 Litern, keine Wechselmenge — im Zweifel vorher fragen. Beim Trockensumpfmotor wird der Ölstand nur bei betriebswarmem Motor im Stand abgelesen.DACH incl. Switzerland

Carrera 3.0 (1976–1977): large service kit. 911 SC 180 hp (1978–1980) and 911 SC 204 hp (1981–1983): small service kit, each with the matching fuel filter. Carrera 3.2 (1984–1989, 915 and G50 gearbox): small service kit. For the 930 Turbo 3.0 we assemble the kit on request. Every item is listed with its Porsche part number in the kit's scope of delivery, delivery time 3–5 working days.
Small covers the minor service: oil, fuel and air filter, spark plugs and sealing rings. Large additionally contains the valve cover gaskets with nuts and washers, which are renewed anyway when the valve clearance is adjusted. Engine oil and brake fluid are not included in any kit; you'll find matching oils in the shop.
Every 10,000 km or once a year is typical — whichever comes first. The oil filter is replaced with every oil change. On the air-cooled flat-six with dry-sump lubrication, the oil level is checked only with the engine at operating temperature, car stationary.
Besides oil changes and brakes, above all the valve clearance (typically every 20,000 km), the ignition system with plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm, and the V-belt — on the air-cooled engine it drives the cooling fan and is therefore directly responsible for engine cooling.
The chain tensioners of early G-Series engines are considered wear-prone. The proven upgrade is the hydraulic, oil-fed chain tensioners of the Carrera 3.2 — including the associated oil lines and chain housing parts. You'll find the matching components in the Belts & timing drive group.
