Porsche 993 Maintenance.

The 993 is the final evolution of the air-cooled 911: hydraulic lifters instead of adjustable tappets, a six-speed gearbox and the LSA multi-link rear axle. Servicing shifts accordingly — less adjustment work on the valvetrain, more attention to oil consumption, belt drive and suspension bushings. Here you'll find the wear parts for Carrera, Carrera 4, S models, Targa and Turbo — curated in OEM / original equipment quality, with verified part numbers.

The service schedule

The intervals.

The M64 in the 993 is the most mature air-cooled flat-six: hydraulic lifters do away with classic valve adjustment, and the oil-fed chain tensioners are considered durable. What remains is the twin-spark ignition with its small distributor belt — and with the valve guides, the 993 has its own well-documented wear point.

The reference values follow the Porsche service schedule and the practice of specialised workshops. Your service book and the condition of your car remain decisive — for low-mileage cars, the time interval counts more than the distance.

Service schedule · 911 (993)Reference values
  • 15,000–20,000 km / 1 year

    Engine oil & oil filter

Dry sump holding around 11.5 l — check the oil level at idle with the engine at operating temperature. New oil filter with every change.

  • Not required

    Valve clearance

Hydraulic lifters from the factory: the 993 no longer needs valve adjustment — which makes timely oil changes all the more important.

  • 60,000 km

    Spark plugs (12 pcs)

Twin-spark ignition with two plugs per cylinder — replace earlier with frequent short trips, check plug connectors and ignition leads as well.

  • Preventively

    Distributor belt

The 993 also synchronises its two distributors via a small toothed belt — retrofit the vent kit, replace the belt preventively.

  • Every service

    Check the V-belt

Fan and alternator hang on the belt drive — on the air-cooled 911 that's half the engine cooling. Check tension and condition.

  • Major service

    Air & fuel filter

Replace the fuel filter with the major service, air filter element according to condition — check intake boots for cracks (unmetered air).

  • Every 2 years

    Brake fluid

Time-based change regardless of mileage. Check pads, discs and brake hoses at every service.

  • As needed

    LSA rear axle

Clunking or uneven tyre wear points to worn control arms and rubber bushings of the multi-link axle — plan a wheel alignment after replacement.

  • Ongoing

    Oil consumption & leaks

Valve guides are the 993's known wear point — watch for blue smoke on cold start, check valve covers and oil lines for leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

993 maintenance in detail.

Which service kit fits my 993?

For Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera S, 4S and RS the 20,000 km kit of genuine Porsche parts: air filter, both oil filters (thermostat housing and crankcase), twelve spark plugs, two pollen filters, sealing rings and O-rings, every item listed with its part number in the scope of delivery, delivery time 3–5 working days. The kit for Turbo and GT2 is currently unavailable; on request we assemble it from individual parts.

Why does the service kit contain no valve cover gaskets?

Because the 993 with its hydraulic lifters no longer needs valve adjustment and the valve covers stay closed during the service interval. Engine oil (around 11.5 litres) and brake fluid are not included either; you'll find matching oils in the shop.

How often does a Porsche 993 need an oil change?

Porsche specified generous intervals; in practice an annual change or every 15,000–20,000 km — whichever comes first — has proven itself. The M64 holds around 11.5 litres, and the oil filter is always replaced. On the dry-sump engine, the oil level is read at idle with the engine at operating temperature.

Does the 993 still have the distributor belt like the 964?

Yes. The 993's twin-spark ignition also works with two distributors connected by a small toothed belt. If it snaps, the second plug bank fails — causing misfires and even the risk of engine damage. Retrofitting the vent kit and replacing the belt preventively remains the proven recommendation.

Does the valve clearance need adjusting on the 993?

No — as the first air-cooled 911, the 993 has hydraulic lifters. That saves the classic adjustment appointment, but makes clean oil and timely changes all the more important. Ticking lifters after a cold start point to wear or overdue oil.

Why does my 993 smoke blue on cold start?

Worn valve guides are the known wear point of the M64 in the 993. Moderate oil consumption is normal on the air-cooled engine — clear blue smoke after start-up, however, points to the guides; then a cylinder head overhaul is due.

What needs maintaining on the LSA rear axle?

The 993's multi-link axle has considerably more control arms and rubber bushings than any 911 rear axle before it. Clunking, vague handling or uneven tyre wear point to worn bushings — a wheel alignment belongs to the job after replacement.

Do the parts fit Carrera, 4S and Turbo?

Many service parts are identical across all 993s. On brakes and suspension, however, Turbo, 4S and the Carrera models partly go their own ways — when in doubt, we match the assignment based on vehicle data and part number before you order.

Do you ship to Switzerland?

Yes, Switzerland is a firm part of our delivery area. We prepare the export documents; Swiss customs collects the import duties separately on delivery.

What quality are the service parts?

For each item we curate the version that has proven itself on the 993 — in OEM / original equipment quality from established manufacturers. If an item is a genuine Porsche part, this is explicitly stated in the product description.
