Porsche 964 Maintenance.

The 964 is the most modern air-cooled 911 of its era — and makes its own demands on servicing: twin-spark ignition with a distributor belt, sealing of the early M64 engines, dual-mass flywheel and hydraulic engine mounts. Here you'll find all wear parts for Carrera 2 and Carrera 4 — curated in OEM / original equipment quality, with verified part numbers.

The service schedule

The intervals.

The 3.6-litre M64 is robust but demands attention in the right places: the twin-spark ignition is synchronised by a small distributor belt whose failure can get expensive — and the early engines up to around model year 1991 came without cylinder head gaskets, which makes regular leak checks worthwhile.

The reference values follow the Porsche service schedule and the practice of specialised workshops. Your service book and the condition of your car remain decisive — for cars that sit a lot with low mileage, the time interval counts.

Service schedule · 911 (964)Reference values
  • 15,000 km / 1 year

    Engine oil & oil filter

Dry sump holding around 11.5 l — check the oil level at idle with the engine at operating temperature. New oil filter with every change.

  • 20,000 km

    Adjust valve clearance

The M64 still runs classic tappets — adjustment includes new valve cover gaskets.

  • 20,000–30,000 km

    Spark plugs (12 pcs)

Twin-spark ignition: two plugs per cylinder. Check plug connectors and ignition leads as well.

  • Preventively

    Distributor belt

The small toothed belt between the two distributors is the Achilles heel of the twin-spark ignition — retrofit the vent kit, replace the belt preventively.

  • Every service

    Check the V-belt

Drives the cooling fan and alternator — part of engine cooling on the air-cooled 911. Check tension and condition.

  • Major service

    Air & fuel filter

Motronic injection: replace the fuel filter with the major service, air filter element according to condition.

  • Every 2 years

    Brake fluid

Change regardless of mileage. Check pads, discs and brake hoses at every service.

  • As needed

    Engine mounts & flywheel

Worn hydraulic engine mounts and rattling early dual-mass flywheels are typical 964 trouble spots — replace when symptoms appear.

  • Ongoing

Engine & oil circuit leak check

Check cylinder heads (early engines without head gaskets), oil return tubes and oil lines for leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

964 maintenance in detail.

Which service kit fits my 964?

Carrera 2, Carrera 4 and RS: the 20,000 km kit contains oil filter, air filter, valve cover and camshaft housing gaskets and the fastening hardware. The 40,000 km kit contains the same parts plus twelve spark plugs for the twin-spark ignition. For the 964 Turbo 3.3 and 3.6 there is a separate kit of oil filter, gaskets and fastening hardware, without air filter and spark plugs, with a delivery time of two to four weeks. All three kits consist of genuine Porsche parts, every item listed with its part number in the scope of delivery.

Why does the 20,000 km kit contain no spark plugs?

Because the Porsche service schedule only calls for the twelve plugs of the twin-spark ignition at the 40,000 km interval. If you want to change them earlier, you'll find the plugs in the Twin-spark ignition group. Engine oil (around 11.5 litres) and brake fluid are not included in any kit.

How often does a Porsche 964 need an oil change?

An annual change or every 15,000 km — whichever comes first — has proven itself. The M64 holds around 11.5 litres; the oil filter is replaced with every change. On the dry-sump engine, the oil level is checked at idle with the engine at operating temperature.

What's the story with the distributor belt?

The 964's twin-spark ignition uses two distributors connected by a small toothed belt. If it snaps, the second distributor bank fails — causing misfires and even the risk of engine damage. Retrofitting the vent kit and replacing the belt preventively have proven themselves. You'll find the parts in the Twin-spark ignition group.

Why do many 964s leak oil at the cylinder heads?

Early M64 engines were built without cylinder head gaskets; Porsche only introduced gaskets with the later versions. Light seepage is common — larger leaks should be fixed, often together with the oil return tube seals.

How do I recognise a failing dual-mass flywheel?

Typical signs are rattling at idle and judder when pulling away. The early dual-mass flywheels are considered vulnerable; switching to the later version — usually together with the clutch — is the proven fix.

Do the parts fit both Carrera 2 and Carrera 4?

Many service parts are identical on both — but brakes, suspension and drivetrain differ significantly in places between C2 and C4. When in doubt, we check the assignment based on vehicle data and part number before you order.

Do you ship to Switzerland?

Yes — we regularly ship to Switzerland and prepare the export documents. Swiss import duties are collected separately on delivery.

What quality are the service parts?

Our program is curated: parts in OEM / original equipment quality from established manufacturers. If an item is a genuine Porsche part, this is explicitly stated in the product description.
