This vacuum pump is part of the brake booster system (power brake) of various Porsche models (Boxster/Cayman, 997, 991, etc.). It serves to generate the vacuum required by the brake booster to provide power assistance to the driver during braking. In many modern Porsche engines (especially those with higher power levels, forced induction, or engines where manifold vacuum is insufficient under certain operating conditions), an auxiliary vacuum pump is used, as the manifold vacuum alone may not always provide sufficient or stable vacuum for the brake booster.
