Description
The "rotor" head is fixed on top of the distributor shaft, which is driven and synchronized by a gear on the engine's camshaft. This rotor is pressed against a carbon brush at the central terminal of the distributor cap, which is either connected to the ignition coil through the top and wired directly to the coil in HEI systems, or connected remotely to the ignition coil via the central terminal in point ignition systems. The rotor is designed so that the central tab is electrically connected to its outer edge, so that the voltage arriving at the central post travels through the carbon point to the outer edge of the rotor.
